Job Description

The Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 'Officer '(CDO) will be key to the implementation of the Company’s national strategy around diversity, equity and inclusion.


The Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 'Officer '(CDO) will be key to the implementation of the Company’s national strategy around diversity, equity and inclusion. As a senior leadership position, this role will report directly to the President & CEO and partner with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council, staff, Board, volunteers and other key constituents to advance the organization’s lifesaving mission while fostering and implementing DE&I in the Lung Association’s internal and external programs and processes. 

The CDO will develop, direct, and evaluate the impact of strategies and practices related to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion across the Association.  This includes, for example, assessing current policies and setting goals for progress; communicating with staff and volunteers to understand and address the needs of a diverse workforce and volunteer base; making recommendations and implementing best practices, especially in regards to inclusive staff and volunteer recruiting, onboarding, development and culture of the organization; advancing diversity and inclusion through strategic planning; enhancing the impact and awareness of our Mission in diverse communities; addressing and executing training and programs to promote an environment that is welcoming to staff and visitors regardless of race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, parental status, national origin, socioeconomic status, ability, or veteran status. 


  • Lead the ongoing development and implementation of the Association’s DEI strategies and ensure alignment with our mission, values, and business strategy.
  • Serve on the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and lead the DEI Council as prescribed by the DEI Council Charter.
  • Work as an advisor to the President & CEO on DEI issues and opportunities.
  • Promote an organizational culture that embraces diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging as core values.
  • Develop and track metrics that will allow the Association to measure success against DEI Strategies and goals to determine future needs.
  • Identify DEI learning needs and lead educational efforts across the Association.  
  • Serve as a resource and point person for existing and future DEI needs across the Association. 
  • Cultivate external partnerships with organizations that advance our DEI strategies and support the Association’s mission  
  • With CHRO, establish candidate-centered recruitment and development programs that enable bias-free and inclusive hiring of diverse talent 
  • With Chief Field Officer, develop inclusive volunteer recruitment strategies and practices for local leadership boards and address gaps.
  • With Chief Mission Officer, identify and coordinate opportunities to strengthen the work of the Mission team in addressing key drivers of lung health disparities, ensure continuous communication and relationship building among local staff, partners, Lung Association stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with Chief Development Officer to identify, cultivate, and secure funding for disparate populations in a culturally informed manner.
  • Work to ensure that our programs and services are accessible for differently abled staff and communities.
  • Maintain knowledge of changes in federal and state laws and regulations to ensure compliance with best practices.
  • Monitor DEI trends and stay abreast of emerging issues throughout the Association and local communities.
  • Other duties as required. 


Education & Experience

  • Master's degree or equivalent; public health, human resource management, organization behavior or diversity-related degree preferred. 
  • 7-10 years leadership experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in a complex professional organization.
  • Experience working with for-profit or not-for-profit boards and their associated committees preferred.
  • Experience in program development / management across variety of large, complex projects.  
  • Ability to articulate the importance of equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion and understanding of best practices that affect organizational change.
  • Direct experience in support of health equity and/or health disparities programs.

Skills & Competencies 

  • Demonstrated effectiveness at listening and responding with empathy in a diverse environment, building consensus, and managing conflict. 
  • Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in the public health equity field.  
  • Ability to assess change readiness and implement change management strategies.
  • Experience leading transformation projects in a dynamic and fluid environment. 
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to discrimination and equal opportunity. 
  • Clear and effective communicator including exceptional writing and presentation skills. 
  • Ability to develop collaborative relationships across teams in the organization.
  • Highly experienced with Excel for reporting and analytics, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive materials and situations.
  • Strong executive presence.
  • Skilled relationship-builder; proven ability to get results across multiple groups and disciplines.  
  • Self-directed, resourceful and comfortable in working with a high degree of ambiguity and driving clarity in key areas.
