Job Description

The primary purpose of the Immunization/Staff Pharmacist is to administer vaccines during pharmacy-led immunization clinics in a safe and effective manner consistent with all applicable policies, procedures, and legal requirements. This position is located at our Woodridge, IL pharmacy.


Staff Pharmacist Functions and Responsibilities:

• Possess knowledgeable understanding of current medication information, health care concepts and all regulations relative to the practices of institutional pharmacy.
• Interpret and assess new and refill order requests accurately to ensure appropriate therapy and maintain patient safety.
• Clarify inappropriate physician orders when necessary.
• Provide an accurate final check on all prepared medication to ensure completeness.
• Prepare and complete all appropriate documentation required on orders, prescriptions, controlled substance records, general workflow, etc.
• Monitor and recommend therapy adjustments based on patient status, lab work, and culture results.

• Monitor Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) lab work, recommend dosing adjustments when appropriate, communicate with nursing staff and prescribers, enter orders into the pharmacy software, and coordinate deliveries to communities.
• Provide physicians, nursing staff, and public with drug information such as drug selection, dosage, proper administration, etc.
• Counsel patients and review medications using audio/visual technology for tele-pharmacy.
• Maintain established goals for initial and final review productivity levels, which meets operational needs and ensures deliveries leave as scheduled.
• Model a supervisory role: on a daily basis, in partnership with management, assume responsibilities including assigning, directing, and supervising pharmacy staff and workflow to achieve and maintain consistent and efficient processing and delivery of all prescription orders.

Immunization Functions and Responsibilities:

• Possess knowledgeable understanding of current vaccine information, health care concepts, and all regulations relative to the practices of pharmacist-based immunization delivery.

• Ensure all necessary vaccines and supplies are available for each vaccination clinic and maintain proper storage of vaccines and supplies.

• Counsel patients and provide appropriate Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) during each clinic.

• Report any adverse events as required to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) and to the primary care provider named by the patient.

• Assume responsibilities including assigning, directing, and overseeing other pharmacy staff to achieve and maintain efficient and safe delivery of all vaccines.

• Collaborate with nursing community employees as required before, during, and after clinics.

• Travel as required to attend clinics at various locations.

• Any and all duties as assigned.


To perform this job successfully, the ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily is necessary and the qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD) from NABP accredited College of Pharmacy.
  • Valid state registered pharmacist license.
  • Ability to maintain organization and prioritize.
  • Exhibit initiative, professionalism, and reliability.
  • Successfully completed an Immunization course of training accredited by the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education (ACPE), or a similar health authority or professional body approved by the Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Valid Basic Life Support Certification for Healthcare Providers issued by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, the American Safety and Health Institute, or an equivalent as determined by the Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Comply with annual TB testing and blood borne pathogen training.
  • Previous vaccination with Hepatitis B series or willingness to receive Hepatitis B series as a condition of employment.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, and enthusiasm to serve senior residents.

Qualifications preferred

  • Immunization administration experience.
