Chemist, Indiana Harbor Plant

Job Responsibilities:  

  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards. 
  • Possess the ability to work effectively within a team environment, utilizing clear and effective communication skills.
  • Supervise a crew of hourly employees, uphold and enforce safety, environmental, job procedures, and maintain general discipline of the crew.
  • Maintain laboratory quality system and ISO 17025 accreditation through A2LA.
  • Responsible for analytical method development and application of ASTM test methods.
  • Responsible for collaboration, maintenance, repair, and the troubleshooting of laboratory, sample preparation, and testing equipment.
  • Analyze current operating performance and standard operating procedures and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Responsible for writing and maintaining work instructions for laboratory work.
  • Responsible for administering safety program.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping.
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory chemicals and equipment spares.
  • Communicate with upstream and downstream operations and non-Cleveland-Cliffs contractors to coordinate work, deliveries, and service.
  • Various other duties, as needed, to support the business. 

Minimum Requirements   
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Chemistry
  • Proven communication (verbal and written), analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work with and teach employees with various educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic work environment.
  • Demonstrated success in defining and resolving problems and working for continuous improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
Preferred Requirements 
  • Master’s degree (M.S.) in Chemistry.
  • Supervisory experience in manufacturing setting
  • Experience in atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP, XRF, OES).
  • Experience with LECO elemental analyzers (C, S, N, O).
  • Experience performing wet chemical analysis.
